Coming and Going: Alabama 2024 Offseason Roster Tracker
Remember what it was like for the Alabama Crimson Tide this time last year? Finishing No. 5 in the College Football Playoff rankings (and wondering isn't it supposed to be the best four teams that get spots in the semifinals?), Nick Saban's team was left facing Kansas State in the Sugar Bowl.
Considering what the Crimson Tide had been used to, it would have been understandable if numerous players had decided not to make the trip or suit up, choosing to instead to turn the page.
Not having any players opt out of the game, including No. 1 draft pick Bryce Young and No. 3 Will Anderson Jr., was remarkable. Nevertheless, 10 scholarship players did enter the portal after the regular season ended in the Iron Bowl. They included offensive lineman Javion Cohen (Miami), wide receivers Traeshon Holden (Oregon), and JoJo Earle (TCU), plus cornerback Khyree Jackson (Oregon).
Roster movement has become a big part of December, with the transfer portal opening for 30 days beginning Dec. 4, and the early signing period getting under way Dec. 20. Add in players declaring for the 2024 NFL Draft, and it can be a time of roster chaos.
This offseason, a lot of attention will be placed on Alabama's quarterback room, if for no other reason than the numbers. Jalen Milroe not only won the starting job as a redshirt sophomore and finished in the top 10 of the voting for the Heisman Trophy.
He was just one of five quarterbacks on the roster at the regular season, the others being Ty Simpson, Tyler Buchner, Dylan Lonergan and Eli Holstein. The Crimson Tide also has 5-star prospect Julian Sayin, who some believe might be the nation's top recruit this year, due to shortly arrive.
So the question has been not been if Alabama would lose any quarterbacks, but how many.
It'll be at least one as Tyler Buchner, who transferred in over the summer from Notre Dame, will reportedly transfer as a lacrosse player. True freshman Holstien has also entered the transfer portal.
