CINCINNATI — The Reds hope to add another quality starting pitcher this offseason to a rotation that includes Hunter Greene, Nick Lodolo and Graham Ashcraft.

White Sox ace Dylan Cease is considered the best starter on the trade block and the Reds have shown interest, but a deal appears unlikely.

According to Jason Williams of the Cincinnati Enquirer, Chicago asked Cincinnati for a combination of Rhett Lowder, Chase Petty, Connor Phillips, Edwin Arroyo and an unnamed prospect.

Lowder (No. 2), Arroyo (No. 3), Phillips (No. 4) and Petty (No. 6) are all considered top prospects in the Reds' farm system.

Cease, 27, is under team control through the 2025 campaign, which is why the asking price is high. He's an affordable, high-end starting pitcher that won't be a free agent for two seasons.

He was the American League Cy Young runner-up in 2022. He took a step back in 2023, posting a 4.58 ERA and racking up 214 strikeouts in 177 innings.

The Reds could shift their focus to the free agent market or pursue a trade for Shane Bieber if they decide to move on from a potential Cease deal.
